SMT-Pod Student Seminar Series Call for Proposals (Fall 2026)

The editorial board of SMT-Pod invites proposals for a special mini-series featuring student projects from a graduate-level seminar to be featured in Season 6 (Spring 2027).

If you are planning to teach a seminar on a special topic and are interested in experimenting with the podcast format as a final project, this call is for you! Simply provide the details of the course and write up a short proposal including:

  • Instructor Name
  • Institution
  • Course Title
  • Anticipated Enrollment
  • Duration of Course (8, 10, 16 weeks, other?) and course dates
  • Brief Course Description/overview
  • Seminar Series Course Proposal (ca. 300–500 words)
    • What is the topic of your course? What sorts of research/pedagogical questions will you be focusing on throughout the term?
    • What will you be asking your students to discuss in their podcasts? Will you provide a specific prompt, or will it be more open-ended?
    • Why SMT-Pod?
  • Five (5) potential reviewers (not affiliated with instructor’s institution or SMT-Pod executive, program, or production boards)
  • Technology needs/experience (audio recording and editing)

Other Considerations:

  • Timeline: Will be determined by the course instructor based on their institution’s term schedule and agreed upon by the SMT-Pod Executive Board.
  • Class Size: No more than twelve (12) and no less than five (5) students enrolled in the course.
  • Episode Length: While there is no time limit for episodes, SMT-Pod generally publishes short (10–15 min), medium (20–30 min), and long (30–60 min) episodes. Short- or medium-length episodes would be ideal for this project.
  • Note: Course proposal acceptance does NOT indicate individual proposal acceptances. Student submissions will go through the same peer review process as any other submission to SMT-Pod.

Course proposals will be due on July 16, 2026 for Fall Semester, Fall Quarter, and/or Winter Quarter courses. Proposals can be submitted here.

For an excellent example of what this series could look like for you and your students, see the inaugural Student Seminar Series in Season 5 (episodes 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, and 5.5), which follows Dr. Rachel Lumsden’s seminar titled “Gender and Contemporary Opera.”

If you have questions, concerns, or would simply like to talk through your idea before submitting a proposal, please don’t hesitate to contact us at smt-pod@societymusictheory.org.
